Text Messaging Program

How Organizations on Benemens text their own Donors — message types, how a Donor enrolls, and how to get help or opt out.

Program overview

Benemens is a giving and donor management platform, operated by Tackon Technologies LLC, used by churches and nonprofits ("Organizations") to communicate with their own donors ("Donors"). This page describes the text messaging (SMS) program Organizations use through Benemens to reach Donors who have specifically opted in — it applies to every Organization on the platform, and every Donor's number is enrolled the same way, described step by step below.

Every text sent through this program is sent by an Organization to its own Donor. Benemens does not use this program for general marketing, and a Donor never receives texts from an Organization they have no relationship with.

Types of messages

  • Fundraising appeals — a request to give, with a link to give online, sent by an Organization to its own opted-in Donors.
  • Announcements — non-fundraising updates, such as event reminders or general news, sent to Donors who have opted in.
  • Number verification codes — a one-time transactional code sent only to a number a Donor has just entered themselves, used to confirm they own that number before any opt-in can take effect. This is not a marketing message and is sent regardless of opt-in status.

Sample messages

Every appeal and announcement text names the sending Organization and includes opt-out instructions:

Fundraising appeal
First Baptist Church: Your year-end gift makes a difference. Give now: give.benemens.com/fbc. Reply STOP to opt out, HELP for help.
Announcement
First Baptist Church: Join us this Sunday at 10am for our fall kickoff! Reply STOP to opt out, HELP for help.
Number verification (transactional)
Benemens: Your verification code is 482913. Expires in 10 minutes. Don't share this code.

How a Donor enrolls

No Donor is enrolled by default — every step below is an affirmative action the Donor takes themselves, in their own Donor Portal:

  1. Donor signs in at app.benemens.com/donor/login using a one-time code sent to their email — no password.
  2. Donor opens Communication preferences and enters their mobile number.
  3. Benemens texts a 6-digit verification code to that number to confirm the Donor actually owns it.
  4. Donor enters the code in the Donor Portal to verify the number.
  5. Donor turns on the "Donation messages by text" toggle — this is the single opt-in step for both fundraising appeal and announcement texts. It is off by default and takes effect immediately, with no separate confirmation step required.

Because this screen requires signing in first, a copy of it that doesn't require credentials — same text, same unchecked default toggle states — is published at /sms-optin-example/ for verification purposes.

The exact consent language a Donor sees on that screen, directly above the toggle: "By turning a text toggle on, you agree to receive automated text messages from your organization via the Benemens platform. Message frequency varies by organization and campaign. Message and data rates may apply depending on your mobile carrier and plan. Consent is not required to make a donation."

A Donor who previously opted out can also re-enroll without signing in, by replying START, YES, or UNSTOP to any prior message from the program.

Message frequency

  • Message frequency varies by Organization and by campaign — there is no fixed number of messages per month.
  • Frequency depends on how often an Organization sends appeals or announcements, not on anything Benemens controls centrally.

Message & data rates

Message and data rates may apply, depending on the Donor's mobile carrier and plan. Carriers are not liable for delayed or undelivered messages. Coverage is limited to supported carriers in the United States.

Help & opt-out

  • Replying HELP to any message returns support information for that program.
  • Replying STOP, STOPALL, UNSUBSCRIBE, CANCEL, END, QUIT, or OPTOUT to any message immediately opts that phone number out of future texts — processed automatically, with no staff action required.
  • Because Organizations on Benemens share one messaging number, a STOP from a Donor's number opts that number out of texts from every Organization on the platform, not just the one whose message they replied to.
  • A Donor can also turn the "Donation messages by text" toggle off in their Donor Portal at any time to stop future texts immediately.
  • Replying START, YES, or UNSTOP after opting out resumes messages.

A Donor can also contact the Organization directly, or reach Benemens at info@benemens.com.

Platform responsibility

Tackon Technologies LLC, dba Benemens, provides the underlying messaging platform. Each Organization controls whether texting is enabled for its own Donors, what appeals or announcements it sends, and when it sends them. Benemens does not originate campaign content on an Organization's behalf, and no message is sent to a Donor who has not opted in through the steps described above.

Privacy

Mobile phone numbers and other information collected for this program are never shared or sold to third parties or affiliates for their own marketing or promotional purposes. Full detail is in our Privacy Policy. The legal terms governing this program — including the opt-in and opt-out mechanics above — are in SMS Terms & Messaging Program, and general platform terms are in our Terms of Service.
