For a plain-language, step-by-step walkthrough of this program — message types, sample messages, and exactly how a Donor enrolls — see Text Messaging Program.
1. What this program is
Benemens is a giving and donor management platform, operated by Tackon Technologies LLC, used by churches and nonprofits ("Organizations") to communicate with their own donors ("Donors"). This page describes the text messaging ("SMS") program that Organizations use through the Benemens platform to send fundraising appeal texts (a request to give, with a link to give online) and non-fundraising announcement texts (event reminders, general updates) directly to their own Donors.
Every text sent through this program is sent by an Organization to its own Donor. Benemens does not use this program to send general marketing, and Donors never receive texts from an Organization they have not given to or otherwise have a relationship with.
2. Consent is required, and it is always the Donor's choice
No Donor is enrolled in text messaging by default. A Donor is only sent appeal or announcement texts after they have affirmatively opted in. Consent is always specific to text messaging — it is never bundled with, or required as a condition of, making a donation or using any other part of the platform.
3. How a Donor opts in
A Donor can opt in to text messaging in either of these ways:
- In their Donor Portal: every Donor has a self-service "Communication preferences" page. Turning on the "Donation messages by text" switch is the single opt-in for both message types described in this program — fundraising appeal texts and non-fundraising announcement texts — and takes effect immediately, with no separate confirmation step and no staff involvement required. (A separate "Text-to-give" switch is also shown, reserved for a future keyword-reply-to-give feature; it is not active today and does not affect which texts a Donor receives.) This page requires a Donor to sign in first — see an example of this exact opt-in screen for a copy that doesn't require signing in.
- By replying to a text: a Donor who has previously opted out can opt back in at any time by replying START, YES, or UNSTOP to any message from the program.
4. How a Donor opts out
A Donor can opt out of text messaging at any time, in either of these ways:
- By replying to any text: replying STOP, STOPALL, UNSUBSCRIBE, CANCEL, END, QUIT, or OPTOUT to any message immediately and automatically stops all future texts to that phone number — this is processed the moment the reply is received, with no staff action needed.
- In their Donor Portal: turning the "Donation messages by text" switch off in Communication preferences stops future texts immediately.
Because Organizations on the Benemens platform share one messaging number, a STOP reply from a Donor's phone number stops texts from every Organization on the platform to that number, not just the one whose message they replied to — a Donor who says stop is never left receiving texts from somewhere else on the platform.
5. Help
A Donor can reply HELP to any message at any time for assistance, or contact the Organization directly, or reach Benemens at info@benemens.com.
6. Message frequency, rates, and carriers
- Message frequency varies by Organization and by campaign — there is no fixed number of messages per month.
- Message and data rates may apply, depending on the Donor's mobile carrier and plan.
- Carriers are not liable for delayed or undelivered messages. Coverage is limited to supported carriers in the United States.
7. Types of messages sent
- Fundraising appeals — a request to give, with a link to give online, sent by an Organization to its own opted-in Donors, always including a way to opt out.
- Announcements — non-fundraising updates such as event reminders or general news, sent to Donors who have opted in to text messages.
8. Privacy
Phone numbers and message activity are handled as described in our Privacy Policy. We do not sell phone numbers or message content, and do not share them for purposes unrelated to operating this messaging program.
